What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a unique approach to stimulating the body's natural healing ability, so it is sometimes challenging to describe to those who have not experienced it. There is no therapy like it in the world. While the work is gentle and non-invasive, the effective practice of it is very specific and precise. (The terms BowenWork, Bowen Technique, BowTech, Bowen Session, Bowen Therapy are all interchangeable and all mean the same treatment.)
Bowen Therapy involves gentle, yet powerful movements on muscle and connective tissue. These movements prompt soft tissue release, sending neurological impulses to the brain. Because the impulses travel through the internal nervous system pathways, they stimulate whole-brain responses, which address every system in the body - internal organ systems as well as musculoskeletal structure.
Pauses are inserted between sets of these movements, which allow the brain time to process and send messages to realign the body. It is thought that because the whole brain is stimulated, the original genetic pattern is re-awakened, and the more recent injury and compensation patterns are released. Respecting these pauses is an essential component of Bowen Therapy, for it allows the body sufficient time to remember and restore its own healthy, natural balance.
Wear or bring light-weight, loose-fitting clothing that I can work through. Or be prepared to be worked on in your underclothes, under sheets or blankets for modesty and comfort.
The ideal time for a Bowen Therapy session is immediately after an injury. This helps the body overcome the trauma before it begins to compensate for it. The compensations often create more problems than the initial trauma itself. Within 3 days is ideal for the quickest and most complete recovery.
Bowen Therapy is a complementary modality in the sense that it enhances and complements, but does not interfere with, traditional medical attention. Bowen Therapy's input to the nervous system is very subtle and the body responds over time. For that reason, it's best to avoid other manipulative therapies (massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy) for several days before and after a Bowen Therapy session as they may interfere with the results.
After you have filled out an intake form, we will discuss your medical situation and the treatment plan will be explained to you.
After your session, you will be given a sheet of instructions as to what to do for the few days following. A second visit is usually scheduled 7 days later to complete laying the treatment foundation. Subsequent visits are determined by your needs.

Because our goal is to rebalance your Autonomic Nervous System there is no chatting during the session. Your job is to simply relax as deeply as possible and our job is to help you. The lights are dim and you are encouraged to keep your eyes closed. The plan is for your Central Nervous System to concentrate only on the Bowen move and not to have to process anything else that may distract focus. You turn from your front to your back only once.

You'll get the best results from your Bowen Therapy if you try to avoid other forms of bodywork for 4 days beforehand and heavy exercise on the day of your session. Please don't use ice or heat on the site of pain.

I had the pleasure of having a number of Bowen treatments from Cyndi. I was nervous at first but her attitude and knowledge quickly put my mind at ease. I had trouble with muscle tightness in my legs. After a few treatments, it relieved the tight muscles and I was able to go back to my regular activities. Thank you so much for your professionalism and attention to my issues. - FN
Truly an amazing experience, I had been so tensed up in pain in my lower back. During my treatment, it felt like cold water was being poured onto the back of my head and neck. I felt instant relief after my visit and would say my treatment/visits have gone from monthly to almost annually, a great experience. I had tried other avenues of treatment but none have come close to these results. I have recommended numerous friends who have all had success with this treatment. Cyndi is a very knowledgeable and caring person who fully understands her patients. - KM
I had a few problems when I first saw Cyndi. My foot and hip were very stiff as well as my upper back. The treatments were super relaxing. The combination of physical therapy and the relaxing environment reduced a lot of the pain and stiffness in my body. The treatments are very quiet. By the time you are halfway through, you are pretty much meditating. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with joint/muscle pains or someone with a busy/stressful everyday life. - Jacob
